More contributions for tsunami victims

CHENNAI, JAN.11. More contributions poured in today from corporate houses and non-governmental organisations for the tsunami victims.

Reliance Infocomm distributed relief material worth Rs. 25 lakhs to 250 members each in Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Chennai districts. The City Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, flagged off the trucks carrying the relief materials.Each family box contains a pair of saris, dhotis, blankets, towels, bath soaps, washing soaps, toiletry, a kg of coffee powder, 2 kg of sugar, one litre edible oil, stainless steel plates and tumblers, a stove, 10 kg of rice and a transistor.

Members of the Cosmopolitan Club presented a cheque for Rs. 10 lakhs to the Chief Minister toward the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund today.

Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, a socio-spiritual organisation, donated anti-depression tablets in Andamans. About 100 volunteers are working in the worst affected areas in the southern coast of India, including hamlets along the East Coast Road.

The Dubai chapter of the non-governmental organisation, International Association for Human Values, has shipped 43,200 bottles of drinking water to the victims in Port Blair. Cargo movers, Gati, have airlifted 20 container loads of relief materials to the Andamans free of cost.

The Gopalapuram-based Rita Welfare Organisation distributed relief materials to 300 survivors in Kasimedu in Royapuram who had lost their possession to a fire shortly after the tsunami.

Medical help

Rigid Hospitals held vaccination camps and donated medicines worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs to prevent infectious disease among survivors in four relief centres. The survivors were vaccinated against tetanus and typhoid and given protection against malaria, diarrhoea and chest infection.

The IMG Academies East, an organisation affiliated to the International Management Group, proposes to raise funds through the IMG Emergency Relief Fund, to provide medicines, water and other essentials to the survivors.

The foundation will work with AmeriCares, a non-profit organisation and airlift one lakh pounds of medical supplies in the next few weeks to treat survivors suffering from infectious diseases and respiratory tract infections.

Students of Chromepet-based SDNB Vaishnav College distributed old clothes to survivors at Puthukalpakkam.

The Rotract Club distributed clothes and provisions to the survivors in Nagapattinam. Forty-one students of Guru Nanak College assisted the Unicef in holding communication campaign at 82 relief camps in Nagapattinam district from January 1 to 3.

They counselled the affected people, showed survivors how to prepare oral rehydration solutions and helped government authorities in distributing relief materials.

The students represented NCC, NSS, Red Cross and Rotract Club.
