CHENNAI, JAN. 11. The Muthialpet police seized over 360 bottles of foreign liquor and 192 beer cans valued at Rs. 5 lakhs from a house in Broadway on Monday. Paneerselvam (30), of Ramanathapuram has been arrested in this connection. C. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police, North, said following a tip off a raid was conducted in a house on Katchaleeswarar Garden Street. Police found liquor bottles illegally stacked there. Police said that Paneerselvam and Selvaraj of Mannargudy bought the bottles from tourists returning to the city from Singapore and Sri Lanka. They were then sold at a higher price. The duo would step up the trade during festivals, Mr. Babu said. The alleged kingpin behind the operation, Selvaraj, is missing. Last year alone, police in Flower Bazaar district unearthed 12 cases of illegal possession of foreign liquor bottles and arrested 13 persons. The seized bottles were valued at Rs. 10 lakhs, Mr. Babu said. The Central Crime Branch Police has arrested a manpower agent on charges of duping 18 persons of Rs. 10 lakhs by promising to get them jobs overseas. He has been remanded to judicial custody. Police said 15 persons from Villupuram district and three from the city approached Jahir Hussain at his office in Egmore. He took their passports and Rs. 10 lakhs and assured them that he would get them jobs with a company in Muscat. However, all of them were sent to Muscat on a tourist visa and excepting one, were deported to back to Chennai. The Muscat authorities detained Srinivasan of Maduravoyal, who is in jail. Mr. Srinivasan's father wrote a letter to the President, Abdul Kalam. Following this, the immigration authorities asked the police to initiate action against the manpower agency run by Jahir Hussain. A check by the local police revealed that the manpower agency operated without valid licence. Hussain was also wanted in connection with an attempted murder case.
