Kofi Annan not denied permission: Minister
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
JAN. 11.
The Government today said the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, had not been denied permission to visit the tsunami-affected areas of the country.
The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed, told reporters that "there is no question of refusal to the U.N. Secretary-General or any other dignitary to visit Chennai." However, he was non-committal on whether a formal request had come from the U.N. for such a visit.
According to the Minister, the Government had conveyed to its "friends" that foreign dignitaries should avoid visiting the tsunami-affected areas so as to permit the local authorities to remain fully engaged in relief and rehabilitation.
