TAMBARAM, JAN. 11. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has appealed to the State Government to extend concessions to the tsunami survivors and said they should be given priority in reservation for seats in higher studies. After a survey of the tsunami-affected areas in the State, along with a team of SFI members G. Selva, state president, said in some areas school students were not allowed to board government buses as they had lost their free passes in the tsunami. "Many students have lost their parents and all their valuables. And asking them to pay bus fare to attend school is very unfortunate," Mr. Selva said. The Government, he suggested, could create a separate quota for affected students and give them priority in reservation for higher studies or even a job. While stating that in some districts teachers walked the extra mile to provide solace to their students, it was not so all over. Teachers should personally visit the affected areas and counsel the students so that they were able to focus on their studies again, he said. The SFI demanded that term and exam fees for the affected students should be completely waived. Autonomous and self-financing colleges should voluntarily come forward for this, he added.
