YSR asks naxals to give up arms

By Our Staff Reporter

GALIVEEDU, JAN. 11. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked the CPI (Maoist) to give up arms and extortion of money and destructive activities lest the law should take its course.

Speaking to newsmen at Gorancheruvu village in Galiveedu mandal, near Cuddapah, on Tuesday, Dr. Reddy asserted that naxalites would not be allowed to move about carrying arms. Urging them to mend their ways and act within the democratic framework, he said maintenance of law and order was the Government's prime concern.

Coercive extortion of money and resorting to blast of public and private properties would be dealt with, he warned. Deploring Maoist charge, the Chief Minister remarked that the police had no need to resort to fake encounters.

Speaking at a public meeting at Veeraballe in the Lakkireddipalle constituency as part of the Rajiv Palle Bata, Dr. Reddy said the Government would ensure irrigation of an additional ayacut of 65 lakh acres in the State within five years as against 70 lakh acres brought under irrigation since Independence.

Work on Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi project to irrigate 60,000 acres in the Kamalapuram constituency, besides Rajampet and Kodur segments would commence in February. The second phase of Handri Neeva project would be taken up to benefit Rayachoti and Lakkireddipalle segments, he said.

Loans for DWCRA women

The Telugu Ganga project would be completed in two years by spending Rs. 600 crores, Dr. Reddy said.

DWCRA women would be given loans of Rs. 1 crore in each mandal at 25 paise interest and `Indira Grameena Kranthi Pathakam' launched by merging Velugu and DWCRA, would be implemented in every village.
