BANGALORE, JAN. 11. Eleven members of a family, including seven children, suffered burns when a gas cylinder exploded in their house in Lingarajapuram in Banaswadi police station limits in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident occurred at around 5.30 a.m. in the house of autorickshaw driver Syed Sultan. Clothes, furniture and other household articles were destroyed in the fire, the police said.

Five of those injured were shifted to the Victoria Hospital. The others were admitted to a private nursing home in Banaswadi. Among the injured were Mr. Sultan's wife, his seven children and his wife's niece.

According to the police, the explosion occurred when Sultan's father, Mohammed Sadiq, tried to light a `beedi.' The blast caused cracks in the walls of the house, which is located in a cluster of three other buildings.

Hundreds of people thronged the place even as the injured were being rushed to hospital. Fire force personnel put out the blaze.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, M.C. Narayanagowda; the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Shivakumar; other senior police officials, and forensic experts visited the spot.
