NEW DELHI, JAN. 11. An apparel merchandiser, who posing as a Jamat-e-Islami militant allegedly sent letters to two South Delhi-based garment exporters demanding about Rs. 90 lakhs in U.S. currency through a Switzerland bank, has been arrested by the Special Cell. The accused picked up the modus operandi from some thriller novels and a Bollywood movie. The Special Cell recently received a complaint from two businessmen alleging that they had received letters asking them to pay 2 lakh dollars if they wanted their family members to be safe. The exporters were directed to go to Geneva in Switzerland, stay in a hotel named Hilton and then go to an international bank where they were supposed to open an account. They were then asked to deposit the amount in that account and obtain its activating password through which the extortionist could access the account on the Internet. The details of the bank account had to be sent on an e-mail address created by the culprit. Acting on the complaint, the Special Cell registered a case. Investigations revealed that the letters had been dispatched from Turkey on December 12. During an inquiry, the police found that one Amit Kapoor, a resident of Kalkaji, had worked for both the complainants as merchandiser. He quit the jobs following some differences, and started worked for his father, who took part in garment exhibitions organised in different countries. Amit also used to visit abroad for making arrangements. In that process, he had also gone to Turkey and was there when the letters had been sent to the businessmen. Suspecting his involvement, the Special Cell picked him up. During interrogation, he confessed to having sent the letters, as he wanted to teach his previous employers a lesson. He further revealed that he got the idea from the movie "December 16" and the novels of writer, John Grisham, the police added.
