Wanted car thief held

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 11. An alleged auto-lifter who was wanted in several cases of vehicle theft has been arrested by the South Delhi police. The police have recovered four stolen vehicles and solved 26 cases of auto-thefts with his arrest.

According to the police, five persons were arrested by the Gujarat police on January 3 for allegedly disposing of vehicles, which were stolen from Delhi, in the State. The accused told the police that they used to receive the stolen vehicles from "Sahil gang" of Delhi.

Following the information, the Special Staff of the South Delhi police, led by Inspector Rajender Singh, developed intelligence about Sahil (real name Mujahid). Acting on a tip-off, Sahil was apprehended from Tughlakabad on Monday around 5 p.m. He was found driving a stolen Maruti car. A knife was also recovered from him. At his instance, two more stolen Maruti cars and a stolen motorcycle were also recovered.

The police said Sahil, a native of West Bengal, had come to the Capital long time ago. He was initially involved in burglaries and later graduated into vehicle theft. He had formed a gang with two other auto-lifters, Sajjad and Imran. The gang had developed strong disposal network in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Sahil and his associates would steal Maruti cars from Tughlakabad and Okhla in South Delhi and drive them to various parking lots in the Capital. Another gang member, Shakil, and his associates would then come to the parking lots and take away the vehicles. On January 3, Shakil was arrested along with Tasleem, Liyakat, Bijender and Jacob by Gujarat police.

The gang had also developed an ingenious way to transport stolen motorcycles. They would replace the registration number plates of the stolen motorcycles with that of another motorcycle and book them for North Dinajpur in West Bengal through the railway on the basis of original documents. Efforts are now on trace other associates of Sahil.
