Nilgiris MP seeks panel to monitor relief work

COIMBATORE, JAN.11. A tsunami victim from Colachel sought assistance from the district Collector, S. Kosalaraman during the Grievances Day meeting held at the Collectorate here on Monday.

According to an official release, Fathima Mary of Simon Colony, Colachel, told the Collector that she was staying at her daughter's residence in the city along with her grandchildren. In a petition, she said that she had lost her home, jewellery and utensils worth Rs. 7 lakhs in the tsunami.

London-based doctors, N. Muthukumara Raja and Maheswari handed over Rs. 2.02 lakhs to the Collector today . The Nilgiris MP, R. Prabhu, has requested the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to constitute a high-level committee headed by a senior IAS officer to coordinate relief efforts between the Central and State governments, as there were complaints that aid had not reached all the affected people.

The officer should report directly to the Prime Minister, he said. Mr. Prabhu handed over to him Rs. 20 lakhs towards the relief fund during Mr. Singh's recent Chennai visit.

Members of the Coimbatore Bar Association met the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa and gave Rs. 1.75 lakhs towards the Chief Minister's public relief fund. The Director of Sasi Advertising Limited, Rajalakshmi Swaminthan, handed over a demand draft for Rs. 50,000 to the Collector.

The Coimbatore Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society has despatched 25 tonnes of relief materials to Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Nagercoil. Statex Mills, Kurichi, has sent a demand draft for Rs. 50,000 for the Chief Minister's fund.

The Coimbatore District United Jama-ath, employees of No.10 AS Beedis, Podanur Al Masjidul Madina, Hayatul Islam, Kurichi, Ahle Sunnath Jamath, Singanallur and Shah Haj Service have contributed Rs. 4.05 lakhs towards Chief Minister's fund.

Rehabilitation centre

The Kollimalai Siddhar Siddha Ashramam, Sathyamangalam, has come forward to set up a rehabilitation centre for the victims. he students, staff and management of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Matriculation Higher Secondary School contributed Rs.1.25 lakhs.

A cheque was handed over to the Kovai Aid for Rehabilitation and Motivation (KARAM). Coir-on Foam Products donated Rs.50,000. The Muthamizh Mandram on Race Course contributed Rs.10,000.

The Devarayampalayam Youth Club has donated new dhoties and sarees worth Rs. 14 lakhs.
