By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 11. The Rural police have arrested five businessmen on the charge of possessing and printing counterfeit notes.

The Circle Inspector, Palode, N. Nandanan Pillai, said 830 fake Indian currency notes of Rs.100 denomination were seized from the accused. The police have also confiscated an imported printing machine suspected to have been used for printing the fake notes.

The accused were identified as Anikuttan alias Prithviraj (35) of Kollam, Rajesh Kumar alias Sabu (35) of Thiruvallam, Satheesh Kumar (29) of Valakom, Jaimon (37) of Piravom and Joshi (33) of Muvattupuzha.

The police said the accused owned several businesses, including a furniture shop at Nedumangadu, financing company and an ayurvedic massage centre in Thadickadu. However, some of the accused had run into deep debt recently.

According to the police, Prithviraj and Sabu were intercepted by the police in front of Perayam Government School on Monday night on the basis of a tip-off received by the Superintendent of Police (Rural), P. Vijayan. The others were arrested on the basis of their confession.

The police said Satheesh Kumar, a Gulf returnee, had sourced the Chinese-made printing machine from abroad. They had purchased the paper used for printing the notes from Bangalore. The printing was done in a house rented out by Satheesh Kumar in Punalur in Kollam district. The accused had printed more than 1,500 fake notes of Rs.100 denomination in the past several months. The notes were entrusted to different persons in the district for dispersal.

The police said the modus operandi of the accused was to palm off fake currency notes along with genuine ones. All were produced before the court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
