Status of rescued child labourers reviewed

By Our Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN, JAN. 12. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, today convened a special meeting of National Child Labour Project officials to review the status of the rescued child labourers in the district.

M. Nallaperumal, project director, NCLP, Tuticorin, briefed the Collector about the entire NCLP activities during 2004.

Later speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Nallaperumal said the NCLP, in association with the departments of police, revenue, inspectorates of factories as well as labour, rescued 160 child workers from various parts of the district last year. Among them, 46 children were rescued in the November- December period alone.

"These children, found working at shops and business establishments, were later enrolled at special schools run by NCLP in different parts of the district." Some of them were even enrolled directly into the mainstream schools. The NCLP insists on providing quality education to rescued children with the sole aim of weeding out the child labour menace from the society before the end of 2007.

About other happenings during last year, he said a Tuticorin court levied a fine of Rs. 16,000 on a match unit on December last for employing a child. "It pertains to a case we detected on July 15, 2003, during one of the raids conducted in the district." The project director said the State Government has sanctioned Rs.2.7 lakhs towards procuring uniforms for the children enrolled at the 40 special schools run by the NCLP in the district. "We plan to distribute the uniforms before the end of the current fiscal," he said.
