Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JAN. 11 . The South Arcot Railway Passengers' Association has requested the railway administration to accord top most priority to broad gauge conversion of Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai and Kumbakonam section. In a memorandum submitted to the Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager D.K. Saraf at the first meeting of the newly constituted Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) here recently, the association president and also a member of the DRUCC, N. S. Ranganathan, said this section connected important pilgrim centres such as Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai. The committee also appealed to the railway administration to speed up the Vriddhachalam-Salem broad gauge conversion work to have direct train services to Bangalore and other places in the southwest. It has urged the railway authorities to run the Cuddalore-Tiruchi passenger as fast train up to Palakkad by increasing its speed. Besides this, it has sought the introduction of another pair of trains between Cuddalore and Tiruchi as the service was popular now. It has also requested the railway authorities to provide funds for laying a broad gauge track from Pondicherry to Cuddalore as the survey in this section was completed long ago. Meanwhile, the Train Travellers' Welfare Association, Tiruchi, has urged the railway authorities to post adequate staff in the ticket counters during festival and summer seasons, when passenger movements are high, for speedy distribution of train tickets. The association has sought the opening of a computerised reservation counter close to the booking counter on the Kallukuzhi entrance side of the Tiruchi Junction. Appealing to the railway authorities to replace the old name board by installing a glow sign-board at the entrance of the Thiruverumbur railway station near Tiruchi, it wanted them to take appropriate steps to check the health hazard posed by stagnation of sewage water close to the canteen at the Thiruverumbur station. It also requested the authorities to attach two more sleeper coaches to the Chennai - Erode- Chennai express trains.
