HYDERABAD, JAN. 12. Well-known cartoonist and litterateur O.V. Vijayan was presented the Sanjayan Puraskaram 2004, an award instituted by Tapasya Art and Literary Forum of Kerala and Sanskara Bharati. The 74-year-old literary personality received the prestigious award on Wednesday at his residence here in Marredpally from Tapasya's patron and writer, Akkitham. This is the first time in the 27 years of Tapasya's existence that its office-bearers have gone outside Kerala to present the award.
Problem-solving
Mr, Akkitham read out a passage from the Vedas and handed over the award and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. Mr. Vijayan, who is suffering from illness, could not respond, but the gleam in his eyes said it all. Mr. Akkitham dwelt on a portion from Vijayan's recent masterpiece, `Gurusagaram', where he talks of how the Bhagavad Gita alone could solve problems and conflicts within the soul. The Sanskara Bharati was represented by its national vice-president, P.N. Kurup, from Trivandrum, general secretary, Balakrishnan, secretary, Yella Rao, and joint organising secretary, Para Krishnamurthy. Mr. Vijayan's wife, Theresa Vijayan, her sister Isabelle, and his sister and a poet herself, O.V. Usha, were present.
