Centre plans joint STF in naxalite-affected States

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 12. The Centre will examine the feasibility of setting up a joint Special Task Force (STF) among the nine naxalite-affected states for coordinated operations against insurgent groups.

The proposed joint STF would also take care of the problem of state boundaries coming in the way of coordinated anti-naxalite operations.

The Government's idea to explore the possibility of a joint STF was prompted by the "valuable experience of the joint STF of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Police in operations launched in the thick forest areas to neutralise the notorious criminal Veerappan.''

These views were considered at the second meeting of the Special Task Force headed by Anil Chowdhary, Special Secretary (Internal Security), Home Ministry, held in Raipur on Monday. Besides senior officials of the Intelligence Bureau and Home Ministry, nodal officers for anti-naxalite operations in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal attended the meeting.

An officer of the joint STF of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka was a special invitee at the meeting and the experience of the STF was shared with the participants.

The Home Ministry will step up its assistance to the states to meet the challenge naxalite violence posed to internal security by increasing deployment of central police forces and arranging for training in guerilla and jungle warfare, Home Ministry officials said.

The Centre will also provide better technological support for improving the defensive and offensive armoury of state police forces and their communications network. It will provide funds to accelerate the pace of socio-economic development in naxalite-affected districts.
