SRBC to be renamed after PV

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 12. The Government has decided to rename the Srisailam Right Bank Canal (SRBC), which benefits the Rayalaseema region, after P.V.Narasimha Rao in honour of the departed leader.

In addition, the memorial that is to come up at the cremation site of P.V.Narasimha Rao in Hyderabad will be a world-class structure that would perpetuate the memory of the great leader.

The Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy, announced this at a condolence meeting at the APCC headquarters here on Wednesday.

Land reforms

In addition, as several speakers suggested earlier, Dr. Reddy too agreed that a fitting tribute to PV would mean implementation of the land reforms as envisaged by him. It would also be an answer to the issue of social agenda raised by the naxalite leaders, he added.

He said PV had done the Telugus proud by his deft political skills and guided the nation to the safe realms during the most troubled times. Though people held reservations against the reform agenda initiated by PV, the latter never forgot the importance of the human face to it, he added.

The meeting was also addressed by the TRS and CPI representatives and attended by the family members of PV. The participants observed two minutes' silence.

The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, former PCC chief, M. A. Aziz, Ministers, M.Satyanarayana Rao and V.Laxmikantha Rao, senior Congress leaders G.Venkata Reddy, N.Bhaskar Rao and T.Subbarami Reddy, CPI MP, S.Sudhakar Reddy, and freedom fighter, Konda Laxman Bapuji, recalled the "silent contribution" of PV to the nation and said his departure had created an irreplaceable void.

Glowing tributes

Mr Sudhakar Reddy went on to add that as several felt, it was not luck that pitchforked PV to the top political position in the country. The party displayed tremendous wisdom in reposing confidence in PV's leadership and the result was there for everyone to see. Though the CPI opposed the reforms, it had to ungrudgingly acknowledge his contribution to development, he said.
