Board for teachers' recruitment

HYDERABAD: A separate board will be established in the State shortly to undertake recruitment of teachers.

The exercise is undertaken by District Selection Committees through a State-level common test.

The Primary Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, told reporters here today that the board would be like the one functioning in Tamil Nadu. A committee had been formed to work out rules and regulations.

Answering a question, the Minister said she would examine whether the lesson relating to the late P. V. Narasimha Rao, which was deleted from a Telugu textbook by the Telugu Desam Government, could be reintroduced.

Open University practical classes

Hyderabad: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University is holding practical training classes for the third year B.Sc. students of physics, chemistry, geology, botany and zoology from January 10 at the university campus.

Students belonging to study centres located in the twin cities, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, BHEL, Pargi, Zahirabad, Medak, Narsapur and Gajwel should attend the classes at the university campus only.

Students of Mahabubnagar, Shadnagar, Gadwal, Wanaprthy and Kalwakurthy are required to attend the classes for geology at Hyderabad only. Students who have not registered so far may attend the classes by enrolling with the office of the Dean, Faculty of Sciences, immediately, a press release said.

Teachers serve strike notice

HYDERABAD: Leaders of the Joint Council of Action of College Teachers, Lecturers and Principals today threatened to launch an indefinite strike from February 1 to protest the Government's alleged indifference to the pending demands. They met the Higher Education Minister, P.Venkateswara Rao, and served the strike notice.

According to a press release issued by the JAC here, Mr. Rao assured the leaders of convening a meeting with the JAC on January 28.

Train halt at Vejendla

HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad-Repalle-Secunderabad Passenger will stop for a minute at Vejendla station, on the Tenali-Guntur section of the South Central Railway, from January 14.

According to a press release issued by the SCR here on Wednesday, the train no. 414 will arrive at Vejendla at 04.15 a.m. and depart at 04.16 a.m. In the return direction, the train no.415 will arrive at 10.13 p.m. and depart at 10.14 p.m.

Farmers go on padayatra

KHAMMAM: Farmers of Kistaram village in Sathupalli mandal went on a 5-km padatarya demanding market price for the land sought to be acquired from them by the Singareni Collieries Company for a new opencast project. Backed by leaders of all political parties barring the Congress, they made a representation to the revenue authorities and the SCCL management to ensure a fair deal for the families being displaced by the coalmine.

Somasekhara panel sitting

HYDERABAD: The B.K. Somasekhara Commission of Enquiry will hold its regular sittings at its head office, Chintalbasti, from January 17 to February 1. This was announced on Wednesday by M.F.Quraishi, Member-Secretary (judicial), in a press release.

Pesticide firm licence suspended

HYDERABAD: The Commissioner and Director of Agriculture, the State Licensing Authority, has suspended for three years the licence of M/s K.V.M. Organic Products Pvt. Ltd, Satulur (Guntur district) for contravention of the Insecticides Act.

According to an official release, the unit has indulged in unauthorised transactions of pesticides. It has purchased and sold formulations of tricyclazole, cartap hydrochloride and acetamiprid without including the products in the licence. The unit also has purchased and sold the technical grade of cypermethrin, alphamethrin and cartap hydrochloride which is in contravention of the act.

National meet on secularism

VISAKHAPATNAM: The All-India Congress Committee general secretary, Digvijay Singh, will attend a national convention on secularism being held in the city on Sunday and Monday.

The convention, being held jointly by the Ashfaqullah Khan Charitable Trust of the city and the Freedom Movement Memorial Committee of New Delhi, will discuss, among other things, the threat to secularism by fascist and communal forces. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Keshava Rao, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State unit secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, the CPI leader and MP, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, will attend.

Conditional bail to TDP leader

CUDDAPAH: The First Additional Judicial Magistrate, T. Lakshmi, who is the in-charge Magistrate of Pulivendula, granted conditional bail to the Telugu Desam State Secretary, S.V. Satish Kumar Reddy, on Wednesday. The Magistrate directed Mr. Reddy not to enter the disputed ZP land in Vempalle and released him on two sureties of Rs. 10,000 each. However, bail was rejected to eight other TDP activists remanded in the non-bailable case following a group clash with Congressmen. Mr. Satish Kumar Reddy was released from Cuddapah Central Prison, where he was lodged yesterday. The TDP district Official Spokesman and advocate, M. Venkataswamy and advocate, Ramanjulu Reddy, argued on behalf of the TDP leader.

`e-Development Cell' opened

Hyderabad: An "e-Development Cell" of the Centre for Good Governance to develop software programmes for the Government was inaugurated by the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, in the MCR HRD Institute here on Wednesday.

The Minister went round the facility along with the CGG Ddirector-General, P. K. Mohanty, the executive vice-president, C. Gayathri Ramachandran, and the Director-General of the institute, A. K. Parida. Extensions of the cell were opened in the offices of Chief Minister and Chief Secretary. The e-Cell has so far covered six sectors, including irrigation, industries and health. Mr Mohanty said the facility was the first of its kind in the country.

Vacancies in consumer forums

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has notified vacancy for the post of a male member. In a press release, it has said that there are vacancies for the posts of president in the Anantapur District Forum, male member in the West Godavari District Forum, Eluru, and a woman member at the Warangal District Forum. Applications may be sent to the commission before January 24.

Woman, son found dead

KARIMNAGAR: A housewife and her five-month-old son were found dead under mysterious circumstances with burn injuries in their house in Turkalamaddikunta village of Peddapalli mandal on Wednesday evening. Police sources said that the bodies of T. Radhika (26) and her son, Akhil, were found in the kitchen.

Huts gutted

NELLORE: Three thatched houses were destroyed in a fire mishap in Narasanaidupalli village of Dakkili mandal, resulting in a loss of about Rs. 50,000. A spark from an oven is said to have caused the accident. In another incident in Venkateswara- pattapupalem village of TP Gudur mandal, a hut was gutted, reportedly due to electric short circuit, resulting in a loss of Rs. 20,000.

Siddu in Nellore

Nellore: Well-known cricket player and commentator, Navjot Singh Siddu, will interact with young cricketers at Swarna Bharat Trust premises, near Nellore town, on January 16, at around 3 p.m. Interested players have been asked to contact the trust office, at the earliest.

Appointed

CHITTOOR: The Government has issued a GO appointing D. Rajendra Reddy standing advocate for 25 years in the Bar Council as public prosecutor for the district judge sessions court for three years. The post was vacant for the past one year as a result of which criminal cases were being argued by the in-charge public prosecutor. The newly appointed public prosecutor will assume charge on January 17 according to official information.

Dental camp

MADANAPALLE: The Rotary Club, Madanapalle secretary, V. Reddenna has said a free dental camp was held by the club at Rama Rao School and 450 students were examined by the doctors -- Anil Kumar, Vijayabhaskar and L. Venkatramana Reddy. Free medicines were distributed along with paste and toothbrushes.

Collector besieged

KURNOOL: Farmers under Tungabhadra Low Level Canal detained the Collector, Vikas Raj, at Adoni on Wednesday demanding water for the rabi crop till the end of February. The Collector, who was in town to attend a function, told the farmers that as much water as was available would be supplied. Later the farmers demonstrated at the RDO and Irrigation offices.

The farmers were irked by the diversion of water to Anantapur district.
