Devotees throng Kalavai

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JAN. 12. Devotees and well-wishers of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt, including industrialists and businessmen, thronged the Mutt's `Brindhavanam' at Kalavai village, about 50 km from here, on Wednesday to have a `darshan' of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. The Acharya is staying there from Tuesday evening after his release on bail from the Central Prison here.

There was an unending stream of visitors to the `Brindhavanam' right from the morning. The Acharya performed the `Dhanur masa puja' from 4.30 a.m. to 6 a.m. and the regular `chandramouleeswara puja' from 9 a.m. `Trikala poojas for Chandramouleeswara going on uninterrupted in Sankara Mutt'

`Pujas conducted without interruption'

The 2500-year-old tradition of performing "trikala" (three times a day) pujas for Chandramouliswara in the Sankara Mutt has continued without interruption, according to an "announcement for the devotees" issued by the administrator of the Sankara Mutt, Kalavai, in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, where the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, is staying after his release on bail from prison.

The announcement said that whenever Sri Jayendra Saraswathi went on tour, he used to take the deity Chandramouliswara with him and perform the "trikala" pujas. This was also known as "salana pooja." Sometimes, the pujas were conducted one after the other during tour or for other reasons. As per tradition, the "salana puja" was performed by one of the Sankaracharyas. When both of them were on "yatra," the deity would be taken along with them.

"On January 10, after performing the `trikala pujas,' Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi was awaiting the court order to proceed to Vellore to bring Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. But due to some events, arrangements were made for performing the pujas in Kalavai. After Sri Jayendra Saraswathi came to Kalavai on Tuesday, rites were performed and the trikala pujas duly conducted. Through this, it has been ensured that the 2500-year-old tradition of performing trikala pujas was not interrupted.
