TAMBARAM, JAN. 12. The Pallavaram Municipality would oppose the construction of a subway near the Pallavaram bus stand if digging is done on land within its limits, the municipality chairman, E. Dhan Singh, said during an emergency meeting of the local body today. He was referring to the fact that the National Highways Authority of India had not sought permission or even informed the municipality that it was building the subway. When the chairman asked the members' opinion, AIADMK members recalled that the NHAI had objected to the construction of a bus shelter by the municipality at every stage. The NHAI, they said, even approached the courts and halted the construction of the bus shelter and hence, the municipality should take exception to NHAI's attitude. However, DMK and BJP councillors said it should be kept in mind that the subway project was for the welfare of the people. Conceding that the sentiments expressed by the DMK and BJP members could not be rejected, Mr. Dhan Singh said that if the NHAI dug the land belonging to the municipality, they would oppose it on the grounds that the central agency did not brief the local body about the project. As of now, digging was only being done on Cantonment Board land, Mr. Dhan Singh added.
