Plan to improve Income Tax revenue

TIRUCHI, JAN.12 . The Income Tax Department plans to collect Rs. 9,000 crores in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry region during the current year and it has collected a sum of Rs. 6,000 crores so far.

Binoy Gupta, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the Tamil Nadu region was currently placed fourth in the country in revenue collection with the top three positions, being occupied by Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore regions respectively.

The department had been sending out message through the media and other means asking the public to pay the tax.

Notices and attachment orders were being issued in many cases for non-payment of taxes.

The department has taken measures to install computers in every field office to make the functioning more efficient and faster as well as help assesses.

It had launched the `Electronic Furnishing of Return of Income Scheme' a few months ago for the salaried classes.

In due course of time, the E-filing of returns would be extended to all sections, Mr. Gupta said.

The department has begun to collect data on 36 parameters including power bills, hotel expenses, purchase of property and foreign travel from various sources to get a picture on how much an assesse actually spends as against his income.

This exercise has commenced in all major cities across the country.

Earlier, speaking at a meeting organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Tiruchi branch, here on Tuesday, Mr. Gupta exhorted the public to ensure that the Permanent Account Number, bank account number and the names of the assessee were quoted correctly in the return forms.

During an interaction with members, he said the department would try to post an Assistant Commissioner at Karur next financial year to mitigate the woes of the business community and chartered accountants.

The Commissioner of Income Tax, Tiruchi, V.K. Poddar, said the auditors could persuade their clients to pay more taxes to enable the department achieve the collection target.
