Hassan ZP to seek Rs. 117-crore assistance

HASSAN, JAN. 13. The Hassan Zilla Panchayat on Thursday resolved to seek Rs. 116.98 crores in assistance from the Union and State Governments for taking up development programmes in the district.

Proposal

The general body meeting agreed to draw up and submit a detailed proposal to the Union and State Governments seeking special financial assistance.

It also decided to draw up a proposal to seek funds for roads, drinking water supply, repair of schools, improvement of infrastructure facilities and health facilities in the district.

In view of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which is coming up on the outskirts of the city, members of the zilla panchayat resolved to seek Rs. 5 crores for the development of roads linking neighbouring districts.

Drinking water crisis

Participating in the meeting, the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, told the members that assistance of Rs. 17 crores would be sought from both the Governments to provide potable water in rural areas by rejuvenating defunct bore-wells and mini-water-supply schemes in the district.

The district was facing drinking water crisis owing to the three successive years of drought.

He said that the situation might worsen in the summer. Expressing concern over the excess fluoride content in drinking water in Arsikere taluk, he said that the people in over 125 villages in the taluk were facing the problem for the past few years.

To contain the problem, special assistance of Rs. 20 crores would be sought, he added.

The meeting decided to improve the condition of schools in the district and seek Rs. 29.93 crores to take up repairs, provide drinking water, construct playgrounds, stadiums, auditoriums and toilets.

Basic infrastructure

To provide basic infrastructure to villages under the Swarna Jayanthi Gram Rozgar Yojana, Rs. 12.60 crores would be sought.

The Minister said that Rs. 24 crores would be sought for providing basic facilities to the district's Horticulture Produce Marketing Cooperative Society, Rs. 7 crores to take up development of rural roads leading to Shravanabelagola in view of the Mahamastakabhisheka scheduled in February 2006, and Rs. 1.45 crores to renovate the primary health centres in various parts of the district.

Vacancies

Reacting to queries from the MLAs H.K. Kumaraswamy, H.S. Prakash and A.T. Ramaswamy of Belur, Hassan and Arkalgud constituencies, respectively, on filling vacancies of medical officers in the primary health centres in the district, Mr. Revanna said that he had discussed the issue with the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, N. Chaluvarayaswamy, and apprised him of the need to fill the vacancies.

Mr. Swamy had assured him that the authorities would be directed to fill the vacancies in phases.

The Minister had also responded favourably to the demand to upgrade the Srichamarajendra Hospital from the present 300-bed capacity to 1,000, he added.

The newly elected president, Shashikala, and vice-president, Srinivas, were present at the meeting.
