Border dispute: State to submit affidavit

BANGALORE, JAN. 13. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, today reiterated that the Government is committed to the implementation of the Mahajan Commission report on the State's border dispute with Maharashtra and Kerala.

He told presspersons after chairing an in-camera meeting with the State Advisory Committee on the border dispute here today that Karnataka will submit a consolidated affidavit to the Supreme Court. The contents of the affidavit will reflect the State's position on the issue with renewed vigour, he said.

The Government has, time and again, discussed the issue at several public fora and also in the legislature, Mr. Dharam Singh said. There is no question of going back or compromising in any way on the recommendations of the Mahajan Commission, he added.

The meeting discussed aspects of the problems being faced by the people living in border areas and development measures to be launched.

A comprehensive meeting to discuss the problems of border areas will be convened in Belgaum. The Chairman of the State Advisory Committee on the Border Dispute, H.B. Datar, said the committee discussed many issues in detail and prepared a comprehensive affidavit. The document will run to over 1,665 pages. Asked for details of the document, Mr. Datar said copies will be made available to the public by January 20. The Minster for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil; the Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash; the Minister or Transport and Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge; the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy; Vatal Nagaraj, MLA; Patil Puttappa, former chairman of the Watchdog Committee on Kannada and Border Areas ; and the Additional Chief Secretary, Chiranjeev Singh participated in the meeting.
