Veterinary varsity inauguration

GULBARGA Jan. 13. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will inaugurate the veterinary university in Bidar on Monday during his three-day visit to Koppal, Gulbarga and Bidar districts, which begins on Saturday. Official sources said here today that Mr. Dharam Singh, who will inaugurate development programmes in the Yelburga Assembly Constituency in Koppal district on Saturday, will leave in the evening for Gulbarga. On Sunday, he will inaugurate a one-day seminar on medicinal plants organised by Krishna Grameena Bank and the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Veerashaiva Kalyana Mantap in Gulbarga. He will leave for his home constituency of Jewargi in the afternoon to inaugurate a health camp and a court complex. He will also inaugurate work on an underground drainage project. In the evening, he will participate in a public meeting in Gulbarga after inaugurating the Nijasharana Ambigara Chowdaiah Jayanti celebrations. He will leave for Harkud in Basavakalyan taluk in Bidar district to inaugurate the 53rd Jathra Mahatsov of Sadguru Chennabasava Shivacharyaru and also the Gurulinga Dhama building, and return to Gulbarga for a night halt. On Monday, Mr. Dharam Singh will leave for Bidar by helicopter to inaugurate the veterinary university and participate in the inaugural function of a bus depot and a 110 kV power substation at Aurad in Bidar district. He will later leave for Bangalore via Hyderabad.

Two held, weapons seized

Davangere Jan. 13. Two members of an inter-State gang of dacoits from Sholapur in Maharashtra were arrested and lethal weapons and two motorcycles recovered from them at Jagalur, 60 km from here, on Wednesday night, according to the police. The police said today that the two persons were members of the "Pardi gang" from Sholapur, and they were allegedly planning to commit dacoities in Chitradurga and Bangalore. The names of those arrested were given as Madhukar Sampath Chauan, alias Yeshwant Maruti Chauan, of Kurumba village, and Narayan Ram Kale of Amba gram. A search is on for three of their accomplices.

Nariman's services retained

HUBLI Jan. 13. The State Government has retained the services of the senior Supreme Court advocate, F.S. Nariman, for appearing before the Second Tribunal on the Krishna Water Disputes, which is expected to start deliberations shortly. This was announced by H.K. Patil, Minister for Law, who visited New Delhi to meet Mr. Nariman. "Mr. Nariman has agreed to be our counsel,'' Mr. Patil told The Hindu today.

Panchayat Raj Dept. Secretary

BANGALORE JAN. 13. The Government has appointed N. Sivasailam, Managing Director, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd., Bangalore, as Secretary of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. The post of Secretary was vacant following the deputation of T.R. Raghunandan to the Union Government. Mr. Sivasailam is also placed in additional charge as Managing Director, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd.

No panel on Bendre Award

DHARWAD Jan. 13. The annual Da. Ra. Bendre Award, instituted by the Da. Ra. Bendre National Memorial Trust and presented on the birth anniversary of the late poet on January 31, is unlikely to be announced this year. The trust has not constituted a committee for selecting the winner and for receiving nominations for fellowship given in Bendre's name. Among the factors that have contributed to the situation is the delay in appointing a Minister for Kannada and Culture, who is the ex-officio chairman of the trust.

`Withdraw order on tax'

BANGALORE JAN. 13. The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has demanded the withdrawal of the notification to levy service tax on freight and resolved that members will not register their names for tax payment. This was decided at a meeting of the 120 district chambers. Representatives of FKCCI and trade unions are planning to meet the Finance Minister on January 19 to discuss the issue, a press release said.

MLA criticises Deve Gowda

TUMKUR JAN. 13. S. Shivanna, Tumkur MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, said here on Thursday that he condemns the statements of H.D. Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister and President, Janata Dal (Secular), against presspersons. Addressing over 50 presspersons who staged a dharna for five hours at Town Hall Circle on B.H. National Highway 206, in protest against the statements, Mr. Shivanna said reporters, especially those in Karnataka, have been functioning in a non-partisan way, and Mr. Deve Gowda's statements are unwarranted. The presspersons threatened to intensify their protest if Mr. Deve Gowda does not apologise.

Veerendra Patil praised

TUMKUR JAN. 13. M.T. Krishnappa, Turuvekere MLA, has said that a life-size statue of the late Veerendra Patil, former Chief Minister, will be installed at Sampige. Speaking after laying foundation stones for an open air theatre, library and computer complex at Hullekere, near here on Thursday, Mr. Krishnappa said the credit for the Hemavathy project goes to Veerendra Patil, who mobilised funds for the project after the Union Government rejected the project proposal. Work on the statue is going on.

Sandalwood seized

CHITRADURGA JAN. 13. The Bharama Sagar police have arrested three persons and recovered 12 kg of sandalwood worth Rs. 2,000 on Wednesday at Sirigere village in Chitradurga taluk.

According to an official release, the arrested were trying to smuggle the sandalwood after felling a tree at Shanthi Vana at Sirigere on Wednesday morning.

Protest

CHITRADURGA JAN. 13. Members of the district's Working Journalists' Union have condemned the Hassan MP and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda's remarks against presspersons in Bangalore recently.

A protest march was taken out on Thursday here expressing concern over the growing trend of attacking the media in the State.

"It is unfortunate that a person who held the highest position is not behaving like a pragmatic politician. Mr. Deve Gowda is not ready to uphold the freedom of press and the right to expression," the president of the union, Chikkappanahalli Shanmuka, said.

A memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister was submitted to S.H. Vijay Kumar, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner.

Elected

Bidar Jan. 13. Gurupadaiah Ghadiyal Swamy has been elected president of the Basaveshwar temple trust at Basavakalyan. Anil Kumar Ragate was elected vice-president and Veeranna Halshetty was elected treasurer at a meeting on Wednesday. All 15 members of the temple committee were present at the meeting, a release said.

Training camp

MANGALORE JAN. 13. Havyasi Balaga, Kadri, has organised a year-long free Yakshagana training camp here as part of its decennial celebrations.
