Death in custody: CI, SI suspended

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. Jan. 13. In an alleged case of lock-up death in Madanapalle, 100 km from here, a Circle Inspector and a Sub-Inspector were today suspended and a full-scale investigation was ordered to bring out the truth.

According to information reaching here, the victim, Chalapathi (35), was picked up from Basinikonda and brought to Madanapalle One-Town police station last night for interrogation in a murder for gain case in which an old couple was done to death in their farmhouse last year.

Chalapathi was reportedly working as a gardener in the farmhouse. His body was found lying in the shrubs off Horsley Hills ghat road.

There was mild tension in the town, with the victim's relatives and locals who saw the police picking him up in the village suspecting it to be a clear case of `custodial death'.

Meanwhile, the Chittoor SP, M.V. Gopalakrishna, at the instance of the DIG, Anantapur, placed under suspension the CI, Ravikumar, and the SI, Mallikharjuna Gupta.

The situation was said to be under control, even as police pickets continued at vulnerable spots.
