Teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya handed over Rs. 58,500, `earned' by the school's students to N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief and N. Murali, Joint Managing Director of The Hindu towards tsunami relief. Photo: Vino John .
CHENNAI, JAN. 13. Collecting money for a cause is noble but giving away hard-earned money is even more remarkable, especially if it comes from children. About 1,700 students from the Kendriya Vidyalaya (Ashok Nagar branch) did just that. From January 3 to 10, children from standard I to XII, worked at home, helping their parents with their daily chores to raise money for the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. A boy nursed his bed-ridden mother; another swept floors. The children helped with household work and parents paid them `wages' for their services, which went to the school's fund collection. A teacher said: "We have this shy, soft-spoken boy who bought eatables at wholesale rate and sold them to residents at retail prices in his apartment block." The boy's mother noticed that her son was now more confident and encouraged by the neighbours' response. Most homes have only one earning member. The teachers said that they were thrilled with the children's response. The school's staff donated a day's salary. A demand draft for Rs. 58,500, consisting of the children's wages, was handed over today to The Hindu Relief Fund.
