Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JAN.13 . Though the Pongal celebrations this year have been overshadowed by the havoc caused by the tsunami, the markets in Tiruchi witnessed brisk business today. With the government cancelling all its Pongal related functions including the Tourist Department's rural festivals, the celebrations are likely to be rather muted. City residents appeared to be inclined to keep the festivities on a low-key. However, major markets in the city including the Gandhi Market, Puthur, Subramaniapuram and Woraiyur markets witnessed good business right from Thursday morning. They were flooded with sugarcane, fresh turmeric and pots the indispensable items for the festivities. Good crowds were witnessed at the Uzhavar Sandhais at Anna Nagar and K.K.Nagar also. Traders in the Gandhi Market said there was a steady increase in the rush to the market. With farmers having a better season this year compared to the situation in the past four years, they were looking forward to the harvest festival with some optimism. Textile traders did not feel any abnormal deviation in the business. For them, business picks up three days prior to the festival normally. This year has been no different. Meanwhile, the city bus stands and the Railway Station teemed with the festival rush. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tiruchi, was operating about 75 additional buses today to various centres from here.
Collector's warning
Meanwhile, the Collector, V.Pandian, has warned of stern action against traders who were found hoarding sugar. He issued the warning at a meeting with retail and wholesale traders of sugar in the district to discuss the hike in price of sugar in the open market here on Wednesday. He appealed to them bring down the price of the commodity and ensure that there was no undue hike in the coming days. Later, in a press release, Mr. Pandian said the price of sugar in the open market had come down by 0.50 paise to Rs.18 per kg consequent to the meeting. He asked the hoteliers and tea stalls to revert to the original price of beverages such as tea and coffee, which were hiked citing the increase in sugar price.
