Free drinking water decision withdrawn

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN, JAN. 15. The Uttaranchal Government has withdrawn its year-old decision to provide free drinking water from public taps to the poor.

The decision, which was announced as a major poor welfare measure in 2003, had to be withdrawn as only the persons taking water from the public taps of Jal Sansthan were getting it free while those depending on other sources had to pay the charges. Now there is no disparity and all will have to pay a charge of five rupees per month, a senior official said.

The decision has drawn flak from the public and political parties.
