CHANDIGARH, JAN.15. The Election Commission of India, headed by T.S. Krishnamurthy, will be visiting Haryana on January 25 to review the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Vidhan Sabha poll on February 3. The Commission would also meet representatives of the recognised national and state political parties here. It would also hold meetings with the Haryana Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary, the Director Genreal of Police, Divisional Commissioners and Inspector Generals of Police who head the Ranges, District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to review poll predaredeness. It would also address a press conference here. Meanwhile, the political scenario has hotted up with the major political parties, including the Congress and the ruling Indian National Lok Dal, finalising their list of candidates. The Congress announced its list of 89 candidates late on Thursday night while it is yet to announce its candidate for the Gurgaon seat. Supporters of a few unsuccessful Congress aspirants are still camping outside the AICC office at New Delhi where they are understood to have staged demonstrations and raised slogans against the State as well as Central leadership of the party. Supporters of a Congress aspirant even burnt an effigy of the party's MP representing the Kurukshetra Parliamentary constituency at Ladwa. And one of these leaders, Ramesh Dalal, has even threatened to float a new outfit. Some former Ministers who have been denied party ticket have also threatened to contest as Independents. Interestingly, some of these disgruntled leaders are alleging that the tickets have been ``sold'' to candidates who have no winning chances. There is an undercurrent of resentment that a large number of ``relatives'' of prominent leaders besides some persons with ``criminal backgrounds'' have been accomodated by the party bigwigs. Expressing anguish over the denial of the Congress ticket to him from the Sonepat Assembly constituency, the sitting MLA,Dev Raj Dewan, said that the Congress had played a fraud with the six Independent MLAs who had joined the party some months back by going back on an assurance that they would be given party tickets. ``All six of us will meet shortly to decide the future course of action. I may contest the elections after consultations with my supporters,'' he asserted. According to official sources, 209 candidates filed their nomination papers today. Monday is the last day for filing of nominations. Meanwhile, according to the former Chief Minister and President of the Haryana unit of the Congress, Bhajan Lal, the party supremo, Sonia Gandhi, has convened a meeting of all the party candidates at New Delhi on Wednesday. In an interesting development, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has decided to field candidates in Ambala,Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Fatehabad and Hissar districts. The Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo, Om Prakash Chautala, will be contesting from the Narwana and Rori constituencies.
