GULBARGA, JAN. 15. The Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajashekaran, today stressed the need for evolving a long-term plan for the overall development of the backward regions of Hyderabad Karnataka. He said that this can be achieved only by stressing on the development of industries and infrastructure and tapping the natural resources of the region. Delivering the S.R. Patil Endowment Lecture at the Doddappa Appa Auditorium here, Mr. Rajashekaran said that the tourism potential of the region should be tapped to draw international tourists to the historical monuments from the periods of the Mauryas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Bahamani kings and Muslim rulers of the region. He said that he will urge the Minister of State for Tourism, Renuka Choudhary, to visit the Hyderabad Karnataka region and initiate action to put it on the world tourist map.
Airport
The foremost requirement for drawing tourists to the region is the construction of an international airport in Gulbarga. Mr. Rajasekharan said that industrial development was one of the most neglected areas in the region and it is a major cause for the economic backwardness of the region. A planned approach has to be adopted to develop industries by extending sops to industrialists and providing basic infrastructure facilities, Mr. Rajasekharan said. He said that small-scale industries (SSIs) in the region are facing problems and special attention is being given to revive this sector as it has a high potential for creating job opportunities.
Shift in priorities
He said that priorities should shift from mass production to involving more number of people in the production process. Mr. Rajashekaran said that although India is emerging as a leader in the field of science and technology, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening and urgent efforts need to be made to bridge this gap. He said that he is happy that the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who is from this region, is committed to addressing the issues of the region.
Memorandum
Recently, Mr. Dharam Singh and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, had met the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. They had submitted a memorandum seeking Rs. 16,000 crores over a period of eight years to develop the backward regions of the State. He said that the Union Government is considering the demands made in the memorandum. Mr. Rajashekaran promised that as the Planning Minister he will present the problems of backward districts in the State to the Union Government and try to get special assistance for developing the region. The peetathipathi of the Sharanabasaveshwar Samasthan, Sharanabasawappa Appa; the Gulbarga MP, Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi; the Chairman of the S.R. Patil Foundation and industrialist, S.S. Patil spoke on the occasion.
