BANGALORE, JAN. 15. The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala's criticism of the Government for its failure to keep its promise to sanction suo motu powers of investigation to the agency. The party spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar said that the Lokayukta should have criticised the Government much earlier. His comments have exposed the Government, which is indulging in idle talk of eradicating corruption, Mr. Kumar said. The previous Government had even spoken of having declared a "Dharmayuddha against corruption," but it was an empty promise, Mr. Kumar said. It has now become clear that the Government fears a powerful Lokayukta as it will attack its supporters who indulge in corruption. The Dharam Singh Government wants the continuation of an anti-corruption agency without any powers, he alleged.
