`Festivals help preserve tradition, culture'

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR, JAN. 15. The Bijapur MP, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, said here on Saturday that festivals, especially regional ones such as jatras, helped preserve the rich traditions, culture and values of the land.

Participating in the "Shivasharane Sathi Gundammadevi Athmarpane," a religious ritual arranged on the occasion of the weeklong Sri Siddeshwara Jatra Mahotsava, he said celebrating jatras and festivals was necessary to attract the younger generation, who are vulnerable to the onslaught of western culture.

He lauded the Siddeshwara Samsthe's efforts in organising social, cultural, religious, rural sports activities and a cattle fair on the occasion.

The members of the Jatra Mahotsava Samiti, Basaiah Hiremath, Shrishaila Gachchinmath, Nagappa Chinchali, Shivanagouda Patil, Rajashekhar Magimath, and S.M. Sajjan, participated in the jatra.

Handicrafts exhibition

The Tikota MLA, M.B. Patil, inaugurated the handicrafts exhibition-cum-sale organised under the aegis of the State Women's Development Corporation and the Department of Women and Child Welfare on the occasion.

He said that such an event would go long way in marketing the products produced by people in rural areas, especially women.

He also called upon the non-governmental organisations and bankers to help the women from rural areas to become self-reliant.
