ISLAMABAD, JAN. 15. Alarmed over the situation arising out of the attack on the Sui gas field by Baloch "nationalists," which left the plant damaged and forced authorities to shut down the operations, the Balochistan Government has sought intervention of the Federal Government.. The provincial Government wants deployment of troops in the town. The move by the Balochistan Cabinet came amidst reports of high tension in the Sui town and possibility of central rule or some kind of military action against elements proclaiming to be Baloch nationalists. Balochistan has witnessed a number of attacks directed at the Government installations and forces in the last few months by elements purportedly agitated over the neglect of the province by the Federal Government. The ongoing mega projects in the province like Gwadar sea part have been opposed by these elements on the ground that they would pave way for "further colonisation" of the province by the rich from the relatively prosperous provinces like Punjab. The current unrest in the Sui town targeting the largest gas field of Pakistan, it accounts for over 60 per cent of gas supplies in the country, is traced to alleged rape of a lady doctor in the gas plant by security personnel from the military.
