MOSCOW, JAN. 15. Thousands of pensioners in Russia's second biggest city of St. Petersburg blocked a central thoroughfare on Saturday in what became the most massive protest yet against social security cuts. An estimated 10,000 angry protesters filled the broad Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, blocking traffic in the central part of the city. They demanded that free public transportation taken away from them after the New Year be reinstituted and house rent hikes abolished. A sweeping social security reform purporting to replace in-kind benefits with cash compensations has sparked a wave of public protests across Russia. As people found that cash compensations were too small and did not cover their new expenses on public transport, medicines and increased utility costs, they staged rallies and demonstrations in dozens of cities and towns across Russia.
