MACAU: Taiwan and China agreed on Saturday to temporarily lift Taiwan's five-decade ban on direct flights between the two rivals a deal that could reduce tension in one of Asia's most dangerous flashpoints. The agreement the biggest breakthrough between Taiwan and China in years will let passengers travel during next month's Lunar New Year holiday without stopping at a third point, usually Hong Kong, as currently required. The January 29-February 20 flights to Taiwan will originate from the mainland cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, said the Chinese negotiator, Pu Zhaozhou. China-bound flights will leave from the Taiwanese cities of Taipei and Kaohsiung. The Lunar New Year holiday, beginning February 8 this year, is the biggest celebration in ethnic Chinese societies.
