BEIJING: Zhao Ziyang, the Chinese Communist Party leader deposed after the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests, is in a deep coma and may be near death, a human rights activist said on Saturday. Mr. Zhao (85), went into shock on Friday afternoon and was given emergency treatment, said Hong Kong-based activist, Frank Lu, in a faxed statement. Mr. Lu had said earlier this week that Mr. Zhao was hospitalised for lung problems, but his statement on Saturday did not give any details on the nature of the illness. ``He is in a coma now,'' said Mr. Lu, who said he had spoken to Mr. Zhao's family. ``His family has been crying on the telephone, telling people who know him to wish him well.'' Mr. Zhao has spent more than 15 years under house arrest after falling from favour in 1989.
