PONDICHERRY, JAN. 15. The Local Administration Department is sterilising stray dogs caught by municipal workers in the Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipalities, and in the commune panchayats of Villianur and Ariankuppam. An official release said here today that the civic bodies had full authority to catch the stray dogs in the interest of public health. Although the municipal bodies eliminated the stray dogs medically, provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act had banned such practice. Hence the civic authorities had launched sterilisation measures. As part of the measure, the civic authorities had caught and sterilised 600 dogs in the past one month.
