Housing sites for fishermen being identified: Rangasamy

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 15. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today said the administration was identifying sites for construction of houses in safer places for fishermen who had been displaced in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions in the December 26 tsunami attack.

Mr. Rangasamy told newsmen here that it was planned to provide individual houses, measuring around 400 sq. feet to each family. As far as Karaikal was concerned temple and government poromboke sites would be used to construct houses for the fishermen. As the sites were some two km away from the coastline in Karaikal, there was no difficulty in selection of land.

The Chief Minister said in Pondicherry, the process of selection was on and all aspects of housing scheme would be considered.

A number of voluntary organisations had come forward to associate themselves with the housing scheme. The Central Public Works Department, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, the National Building Construction Corporation and a few other agencies were also being included in panels. Mr. Rangasamy said the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare had already drawn up a programme to disburse as much as Rs. 43 crores to fishermen to enable them to carry out repairs to the mechanised and other types of boats so that they could resume work at the earliest.

He said the administration had sent a report projecting a total requirement of around Rs. 465 crores for tackling the situation arising out of the tsunami attack in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions.

The Prime Minister would be invited to lay foundation for the housing project for the fishermen.

Each house the administration was contemplating for a fisherman family would involve an expenditure of around Rs 1.5 lakhs.

Meanwhile, the Lt. Governor, M.M. Lakhera, is scheduled to visit tsunami-hit villages on Tuesday for an assessment of the damage.
