CHENNAI, JAN. 15. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched its broadband service, Dataone, on Pongal Day simultaneously in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

On the same day, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) launched its broadband service, Triband, at Mumbai and Delhi. The launch functions at all six cities were inter-linked through video conferencing.

The Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, launched the service in Chennai. He logged on to a website, downloaded and played a video clip of M.S. Subbulakshmi singing the C. Rajagopalachari composition "Kurai Ondrum Illai Maraimurthi Kanna" to signal the dedication of the service.

BSNL's broadband services were launched in Kolkata by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chaterjee, in Bangalore by the Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh; and in Hyderabad by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy.

Mr. Maran said: "India might have been late in catching up with broadband but today we have come up with the latest technology. The prices that are being announced today are extremely competitive and are likely to bring down the Internet browsing charges."

The Minister added internet services had come a long way since Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited launched its 28 kilobits per second (kbps) dial-up connections ten years ago. "But we are not going to rest by thinking everything is fine if the services reach the cities. Our main aim is to take the broadband to the villages."

Dataone's broadband connections for home and commercial use come with connectivity speeds starting at 256 kbps — defined in the National Broadband policy as the minimum speed for broadband — and at monthly tariffs starting from Rs. 500.

According to a press note , the speeds will be at least 17.5 times faster than a dial-up connection and about 8 times faster than ISDN and DIAS connections.

The Internet connection will be provided through the copper lines used for landline telephony using the Asymmetric Digital Subsriber Line (ADSL) 2+ technology.

This will facilitate the simultaneous use of telephone for voice and ADSL modem for internet.

BSNL Chief Managing Director A.K. Sinha said broadband services would be extended to 198 cities spread across 24 of its territorial telecom circles by March end.

At least one million connections would be given by this year.

Others participants at the launch in Chennai included the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, A. Raja, the Telecom Commission chairman, Nripendra Mishra, and The Hindu Editor-in-chief, N. Ram.
