COLOMBO, JAN.15. A high-level Norwegian team, led by its Foreign Minister, Jan Petersen, will visit Sri Lanka "to assess the damage and needs" of the people affected by the tsunami. A highpoint of Mr. Petersen's visit, scheduled between January 20 and 23, will be a visit to the rebel-held Mullaittivu district. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been quoted as saying that its leader, V. Prabakaran, who has not made a public appearance after the December 26 tsunami, will meet Mr. Petersen. In a report, the AFP news agency quoted the head of the LTTE's peace secretariat, S. Pulidevan, as saying that the LTTE leader would meet Mr. Petersen. Except a signed statement expressing condolence to the tsunami victims, Mr. Prabakaran has not been reported to be seen in public since the December 26 disaster, fuelling speculation in sections of the Sri Lankan media. In addition to Mr. Petersen, the Norwegian team includes the International Development Minister, Hilde F. Johnson, the Deputy Foreign Minister, Vidar Helgesen, and Oslo's Special Adviser to the peace process, Erik Solheim. The team is to visit Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka and Mullaittivu in the rebel-held northern coast. Norway which has named Sri Lanka as a major recipient of the $183-million grant to the region, will work through international agencies, local non-government organisation and Norwegian organisation to meet the immediate needs and contribute to the reconstruction of the hard-hit areas, its Embassy in Colombo said.
