KOLKATA, JAN. 15 . The zonal giants, Bengal and Orissa, moved inexorably towards a showdown in the East Zone Ranji one-day tournament here on Saturday. Defending champion and National runner-up Bengal mowed down Assam by 68 runs to pick up full five points while Orissa hammered Tripura by 117 runs to register its second victory. After these wins, Bengal led the points table with 12 from three games while Orissa had nine from two games.
A terrific 145 by Mohapatra and a splendid 101 by Shiv Sundar Das and the first wicket partnership of 239 in 33.3 overs enabled Orissa post a huge 350 for six in 50 overs against Tripura at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus.
Orissa 350 for six in 50 overs (BBCC Mohapatra 145, S.S. Das 101, P. Jayachandra 52) beat Tripura 233 for seven in 50 overs (R. Prasanna 72, Manoj Singh 75) by 117 runs.
