WARANGAL, JAN. 15. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders staged a dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital here protesting against the `neglect' of the State Government and the poor upkeep of the hospital. The TDP MLAs -- MLAs Errabelli Dayakar Rao and V. Narender Reddy - the Deputy Mayor, K. Saraiah and leaders -- Jupudi Sailaja, D. Harihara Prasad, K. Prameela and G. Sudha Rani -- and several others squatted on the main thoroughfare obstructing traffic for over one hour and raised slogans against the State Government. Vehicular movement came to a standstill causing much inconvenience to the public. Despite the plea by the police to call of their protest, the TDP leaders were unrelenting. The police had to divert traffic through the lanes and the bylanes.
Staff shortage
Earlier, Mr. Dayakar Rao, accompanied by a group of party men, went through each ward enquiring with the patients about the medicare and other facilities at the institute. The doctors at the hospital apprised him about the fund and staff crunch. The TDP leaders found the equipment at the laboratories, Oncology department, X-ray plant and other wings defunct. The specialists were also not available. In view of the staff shortage, the authorities were postponing operations while asking inpatients to procure medicines from outside the hospital. Later, speaking to newsmen, Mr. Dayakar Rao accused the State Government of deliberately neglecting the biggest institution in the north Telangana serving the poor people in the region. "The TDP strived to develop it on the lines of a corporate hospital and sanctioned Rs. 14 crores. But, the Congress Government not only scrapped the users' charges but failed to release a single rupee," he said.
To continue agitation
According to Mr. Dayakar Rao, his party would continue to agitate till the Government conceded their demand for release of adequate funds and recruitment of staff.
