PATNA, JAN. 15. The Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Lalu Prasad, today denied that any front had been formed without the Congress.Mr. Prasad, along with the CPI (M) leader, Sitaram Yechury, and NCP MP, Tariq Anwar, denied rumours that the RJD, the CPI, the CPI(M) and the NCP were forming any electoral front.
Firm decision
He said that they were firm in their decision to fight the elections under the same banner and efforts were on to resolve the "prickly" seat-sharing arrangement made complex by the aspirations of workers of each of these parties. There was no difference on the seats now held by them, he pointed out, and added that the Congress intended to contest a specific number of seats. The objective was to prevent the division of secular votes from benefiting the communal forces. The four parties were working out the modalities "to sort out" the candidates' list with that of the Congress. The leaders would find a solution to the problem that had cropped up, with the Congress claiming that it would contest 80 seats in the State. The parties are likely to release their lists on Monday. The parties have also kept their options open on withdrawing their horses midstream basing on their assessment of the prospects of the candidates.
LJP list
The Lok Janshakti Party released its list of candidates for 56 of the 64 constituencies going to the polls in the first phase on February 3. The person in charge of Bihar affairs, Ramchandra Paswan, the general secretary, Suraj Bhan Singh, and the spokesman, Sanjay Singh, said they would release the names of candidates for the other eight constituencies tomorrow. They claimed to have finalised a seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress and that they would withdraw their candidates from constituencies where the Congress had its nominee. They parried questions relating to not leaving out the 17 constituencies for which the Congress had announced its candidates, saying that a final decision would be taken in due course.
