HYDERABAD, JAN. 16. India's tsunami early warning system is expected to be operational by September 2007, with the key elements in place by March next year, the Secretary of the Department of Ocean Development, Harsha K. Gupta, said here today. It would cover the entire Indian Ocean by establishing a comprehensive real-time ocean observational network, comprising bottom pressure recorders around tsunamigenic zones, tide gauges, and radar-based coastal monitoring stations. At a group discussion on tsunamis organised by the University of Hyderabad's Centre for Earth and Space Sciences and Geological Society of India, Dr. Gupta said the Rs.125-crore Indian initiative would incorporate all other ocean hazards, including cyclone and storm surge forecasts.
