BANGALORE, JAN. 16. Experts from the world over will attend a meeting on tsunami early warning systems to be held in New Delhi on January 21. According to V.S. Ramamurthy, Secretary in the Department of Science and Technology, the meet will be a precursor to the setting up of such a system in the Indian Ocean region. In Bangalore on Sunday to attend the annual day of the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Prof. Ramamurthy said the conference would bring together participants from India, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, as well as experts from Japan, Canada, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
`Collaboration needed'
On the sidelines of the CPRI Day, Prof. Ramamurthy told a news agency here that they were in talks with all the countries in the Indian Ocean region. "The system will have three components for earthquake detection, tsunami detection, and warning dissemination. What need to collaborate with the agencies outside the country that are experienced in this process to put in place the ocean equipment for detection. All the other components are already there," he said. India had decided against an early warning system in the past because tsunamis were not known to occur in this part of the world and also because of the expense involved, Prof. Ramamurthy said.
