CHENNAI, JAN. 16. The 15th annual music and drama festival of Hamsadhwani began on Friday with speakers calling upon corporate sponsors to be more discerning in providing support to sabha organisers. The Joint Managing Director of The Hindu, N. Murali, who presided over the inaugural function, said that corporates sponsoring music festivals should ensure they did not support sabhas that organise festivals only during December and remain inactive for the rest of the year. In contrast, he said, Hamsadhwani ran a transparent organisation, organising music and cultural programmes for the last 15 years meticulously. These programmes and festivals were held for most part of the year. The Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, and the Chief General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Tamil Nadu Telecom circle, Shridhara, highlighted the therapeutic value of music. The festival will go on till the first week of April, mostly featuring young and up-and-coming artists, according to the organisers. The organisation also presented a cheque for Rs. 10,000 to the family of Coimbatore S.V. Viswanathan. Hamsadhwani's secretary R. Ramachandran said the young ghatam vidwan died recently while in the prime of his life.
