YSR asks police to observe restraint

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 16. In the face of escalating extremist violence, the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, asked the police today to exercise caution and restraint and avoid getting provoked by the actions of the other side.

Reiterating the Government's stated position on naxalism, Dr. Reddy told the police top brass not to treat the issue as a law and order problem but as a socio-economic one. He pointed out that the social agenda adopted by the Government after the first round of talks would take some time for implementation. The "wrongs" done by the Governments over the last three decades during which naxalism had gained a strong foothold could not be reversed instantly. The Chief Minister was reviewing the situation with senior police officials following the spate of encounters in which several Maoist cadres have been killed and the retaliatory violence by the extremists.
