TIRUNELVELI, JAN.16. The Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, today inaugurated road laying exercise on an outlay of Rs.43 lakhs. After the work on the underground drainage scheme was started, almost all roads under the corporation limits suffered extensive damage and the administration announced that the re-laying of the damaged roads would be taken up after Pongal. Mr. Nainar Nagendran inaugurated the road laying work at Sundara Vinayagar Temple Street (Rs.5 lakhs), Nelliayapuram Arasaradi Vinayagar Temple Street (Rs.7 lakhs), Karungaadu road (Rs.15 lakhs), Odaikaara Street (Rs.5 lakhs), M.N.P. Street and Bharathar Street (Rs.8 lakhs) and R.P. Sannathi Street (Rs.3 lakhs). The Corporation Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, the Mayor, A. Jayarani, the Assistant Commissioner, Palayamkottai, Narayanan Nair, the Executive Engineer, Jai Xavier, and others participated in the inaugural function.
Free saris, dhotis
Mr. Nainar Nagendran distributed free saris and dhotis to the poor and relief materials to tsunami-affected people of the coastal hamlets of the district. At a function held at Valliyoor, the Minister disbursed Rs.12,24,000 to the fishermen, who lost their boats, nets and engines in the natural calamity. He also visited Uvari, Idinthakarai and Koottapuli, where he distributed Rs. 2,000 each, 60 kg rice and 3 litre kerosene to each family. Mr. Nainar Nagendan assured the fisherfolk that the Government would extend of all sorts of help to resume fishing operations at the earliest. Meanwhile, the Palayamkottai-based Church's Auxiliary for Social Action distributed Rs. 21-lakh worth relief materials to the tsunami-affected people of Idinthakarai recently. The Director of CASA, Susanth Agrawal, distributed the relief materials, including 15 kg rice, two kg dhal, three bedsheets to the affected people.
