TIRUCHI, JAN. 16. To promote the spirit of experimentation, research and innovation among schoolteachers, Bharathidasan University School Linkage Cell (BSLC) announced a competition on `Innovative Practices and Experiments' for primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts. The programme, according to R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Professor and Head, Department of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University, aims to inculcate the habit of experimentation among teachers in classrooms to solve problems in areas such as the curriculum, teaching-learning practices, examination and evaluation, methods and techniques of teaching, attitude and behavioural problems among students, co-curricular activities, guidance and counselling, administration and organisation, health and physical education, work experience and vocationalisation, population education, and national integration. Creative selection, organisation and utilisation of human and material resources by teachers were bound to enhance their achievement, said Dr. Kumaravel, adding that education, having witnessed several innovations was expected to play a new role in the changed circumstances. However, educational changes need to be based on research, and experimentation with innovative ideas to be successfully carried out to improve the system and make it relevant to the social and educational challenges faced. Against this backdrop, the university, under the aegis of the BSLC, announced rewards for teachers under the primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary categories. The awards will be given separately for State Board, Central Board of Secondary Education, and matriculation patterns. The university expects this initiative to encourage the teachers to innovate and experiment ways and practices in their classrooms to suit the local needs. Teachers intending to compete are required to prepare a paper in detail containing information regarding title of the innovative practice/experiment, objectives, year of starting the practice and its duration, description of the practice, persons responsible for its initiation, outcomes in terms of student's proficiency, assessment and evaluation of the innovation, difficulties experienced and measures taken to overcome the difficulties, follow-up plan, and general conclusions (factors that seem conducive to the initiation and successful implementation of educational innovation). Three hard copies of the paper along with a soft copy and a crossed demand draft for Rs.250 in favour of `Bharathidasan University School Linkage Cell' (payable at Tiruchi), must be sent to Dr. R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Professor and Head, Department of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi - 620 023. E-mail: karpagakumar@yahoo.com.
