Plea to cut student membership fee turned down

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 16. The persistent plea by students of private engineering colleges for reduction of student membership fee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has failed to elicit any positive response from the international president of the institute.

In an interactive session with the president, Cleon Anderson, IEEE, at Anna University here on Sunday, the students made a case for reducing the fee and charges for having access to several publications of the institute.

Mr. Anderson said the Institute was already taxing its members more so that its services reached more students. "Our Board of Governors is aware of this issue and concerned about it," he told the students, participating in the silver jubilee of the Chennai section of the IEEE.

The problem was felt more in Chennai as the city branch had more student-members per full-fledged member than any other place. However, such a request for the reduction of student-membership fee was not unique to the city, he added. Kumar Shah, senior member of the American chapter of the Institute, said the students should rely more on their own strength than on seeking support from outside. The students should keep in mind that nothing was given on a platter. Suresh Chandra Pal, chairman of the Chennai section of the IEEE, said as there were many student branches, a central administrative set-up could be formed at Chennai or Mumbai to monitor their activities.
