Establishing

new varsities

Sir, — The Government's proposal to set up a high-level committee to study the feasibility of establishing new varsities in the State during the next academic year is a welcome move.

The proposed new universities would certainly cater to the educational needs of the rural poor provided they are established in rural areas. The authorities concerned should take stock of the prevailing conditions in certain established universities, before giving the green signal to the new varsities.

In April 2000, the Union Human Resources Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) had given an assurance of setting up a university exclusively to cater to the needs of the twin districts of East and West Godavari. However, even after five years, nothing has taken shape. Students of the two districts have to commute long distances up to Visakhapatnam for pursuing higher studies. Setting up of a varsity at a centrally located place in either of the two districts, would be of immense benefit to the students of these districts.

Role of civic officials

Sir, — At the recent conference of district Collectors and Municipal Commissioners held in Hyderabad, some of the Municipal Commissioners complained that they were unable to demolish illegal structures and widen roads due to political interference.

I think it is like a child complaining that it failed in the examination due to installation of a TV set in the classroom!

Hence, I suggest to the Municipal Commissioners to sincerely implement the rules and follow the Municipal Act, if they are keen on discharging their duties sincerely. There is no logic in coming out with such complaints, as the rules are clear as to what is expected of Municipal Commissioners.

Teacher training

Sir, — Educationists the world over have agreed that training of teachers is of utmost importance in any educational endeavour. It is said -- One must be a saint and hero to be a good teacher. A great teacher is born, not made. Dedication and devotion are among the noble qualities a teacher should have. Great educationists and thinkers like Pesbolozzi and Herbart believed that a teacher should never get angry or lose temper. Calmness at all times should be their motto. Another attribute of a teacher according to the Russian thinker, Makermko, is self-confidence. According to Aristotle, a teacher should be `thoroughly knowledgeable' and should seek knowledge incessantly.

Change train timings

Sir, — There must be a change in the timings of the below mentioned trains. They are consistently irregular as they are kept aside on the loop line for the passage of major express trains in both directions.

Rajahmundry to Eluru-Rajahmundry Passenger; Kakinada to Tirupati-Kakinada Passenger, Bhimavaram -Rajahmundry Passenger, Tata Nagar via Dhanbad to Alleppy-Bokaro Express and Guntur to Visakhapatnam-Simhadri Express.

Reshuffling in the timings would benefit a large number of commuters between Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. I hope the railway authorities would take note of the suggestion and reschedule the timings of the said train so that they run on time.

Amenities for

RTC commuters

Sir, — The Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) happens to be the only public transport organisation in the State with a massive network of operations and passenger services.

However, I feel that it is the duty of the APSRTC to provide better comforts to the lakhs of passengers who travel by the corporation's buses. The RTC should take steps to construct shopping complexes, good restaurants, hygienic toilets, passenger retiring rooms and children play areas at its various bus stations in the State.

Focus should be provided in providing these facilities outside important towns of the State, as there is a woeful lack of such facilities for passengers who are in desperate need of it.
