NEPALGUNJ (NEPAL), JAN. 16. The 14 soldiers of the Gurkha Regiment, abducted by Maoist rebels on January 14, were released "unconditionally" in Baliya village of Kailali district in western Nepal around noon on Sunday. At about the same time of the soldiers' release, Maoists reportedly abducted 190 teachers and students of a higher secondary school of Adantar village in Dhading district near the capital, Kathmandu. Reports have also come in of abductions of two district officials in Arghakhanchi district in western Nepal. According to reports, Akhand, the regional bureau member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), released the soldiers in front of local journalists and human rights activists at a meeting in the village.
Misunderstanding
Mr. Akhand said Maoists had abducted the soldiers due to a misunderstanding, after they had been mistaken for Royal Nepal Army soldiers. The place of the soldiers' abduction and release is about 225 km from this border town of Nepal and in its Western-most province. Recently, the Royal Nepal Army (RNA) had carried out search operations and claimed to have destroyed an arms manufacturing and training centre of the Maoists in the province. RNA reports claimed that over 100 Maoists had been killed in these operations. The soldiers, whose regiments are based in Jammu and Kashmir, were going to their villages on home leave, when they were abducted by the Maoists. The released soldiers are Ratna Bahadur Bista, Karna Gurung, Indra Dawadi, Nanda Bahadur Khatri, Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Raj Kumar Bhandari, Kamal Chhetri, Khageshwar Subedi, Pushkar Shreshtha, Krishna Bahadur Somai, Shreshtha Kumar Shreshtha, Gopal Acharya, Birendra Tamang and Tula Ram Rana. In another incident, the DSP of Dang district was killed in an encounter with Maoists, RNA reports said.
